Burma prison artist arrives in Italy
Debut for Htein Lin at Turin's Museum of the Resistance
The celebrated young Burmese painter and performance artist Htein Lin makes his debut in Italy at 11 am on 24th October with a presentation of his life and work at the Museo Diffuso della Resistenza - Turin's famous Museum of the Resistance - followed in the evening by the inauguration of an exhibition of his work produced secretly in prison.
Sentenced like many young Burmese intellectuals to many years in jail for a non-crime, the law graduate who brought performance art to the streets of Rangoon used all his ingenuity to paint in jail, using white prison uniforms for canvases and anything that came to hand for paint and brushes.
Several of Htein Lin's paintings are reproduced on this website, including the painting of Aung San Suu Kyi - one of a series done in prison - on our home page.
